Antonieta Contreras is the author of the award-winning book Traumatization and Its Aftermath (Routledge, 2023) and How Deep Is the Wound? (Sentiment, 2025), both of which explore trauma, emotional pain, and recovery through an integrative lens. She is a LCSW-R with extensive expertise in trauma treatment, complex clinical presentations, and emotional regulation.
After transitioning from a career in banking and business consulting, Antonieta trained as a Gestalt psychotherapist and completed advanced specialization in trauma studies at ICP and Human Sexuality at the NYU School of Medicine.
In her New York City private practice, Antonieta integrates a wide range of trauma-focused and relational modalities, including EMDR, Brainspotting, AEDP, Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy and Integration, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Imago Relationship Therapy, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), hypnosis, and neurofeedback. Her approach is further enriched by contemplative practices and techniques rooted in Tibetan Buddhist traditions. She is a Board-Certified Neurofeedback clinician and an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant.
Antonieta is deeply engaged in the trauma professional community. She serves as a Board Member and Treasurer of the New York City Association of Trauma Therapists (NYCATT), is a member of the Education Committee of the European Society for Trauma and Dissociation (ESTD), and holds membership in ISSTD, ESTD, IRNA, and NYSSCSW, among others. She has presented nationally and internationally at clinics, hospitals, agencies, and conferences across the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
Her writing on trauma and emotional health has reached millions of readers worldwide and is known for challenging over-pathologizing narratives while offering clinically grounded, compassionate alternatives. In addition to her clinical and writing work, Antonieta has served as Co-Director, supervisor, and faculty member of the ICP Trauma Studies Program and is currently faculty at UDIMA University in Madrid and New York University.
