Jean Carter, PhD, is a psychologist who has maintained a psychotherapy practice in Washington, DC and Maryland since receiving her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland in 1980. She offers psychotherapy for individuals and couples, with primary emphases on serious trauma and attachment and relationship issues, as well as supervision and professional development consultation.
Dr. Carter was the American Psychological Association treasurer (2017-2022) and served on the APA Board of Directors. She is a past-president of Divisions 17 (Society for Counseling Psychology), 29 (Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy) and 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice). She was awarded the APF Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Practice of Psychology (2020), the Division 29 Distinguished Psychologist Award (2020) and Distinguished Psychologist in Division 42 (2006). She is a Fellow in five APA Divisions. Dr. Carter was a founding member of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.
Dr. Carter was a member of the APA Presidential Task Force on Evidence Based Practice in Psychology and frequently contributes to psychological scholarship through publications and presentations. She served on the editorial board for Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Journal of Psychotherapy Integration and Practice Innovations. She has served as an Associate Editor for Professional Psychology: Research and Practice and on the editorial boards of The Counseling Psychologist, Psychotherapy and The Journal of Counseling Psychology. She was associate editor of The Handbook of Counseling Psychology (APA). Her scholarly contributions have included articles on ethics, the psychotherapy relationship, and the integration of psychological science and practice.
