acob MacDonald, MD, graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2023. He is currently a third year psychiatry resident at the University of Vermont Medical Center and is expected to graduate in 2027.
Prior to becoming a doctor, Jacob attended Bowdoin College, where he received a degree in Neuroscience with Honors, including completion of an Honors Thesis on utilization of the inhibition of return cognitive paradigm to improve memory through attention modulation. After graduating, Jacob worked at the Gunderson Personality Disorder Institute at McLean Hospital as a research assistant. He was involved in multiple research projects, including studies on the effectiveness of Good Psychiatric Management for Borderline Personality Disorder and study how over-control personality features increase suicide risk. Jacob also worked as a Clinical Educator at the Gunderson Residence at McLean Hospital, helping to lead group therapy and training staff on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. He was responsible for collecting data on patient improvement during participation in the program.
In medical school, Jacob was the co-founder of the Maine Health Careers Pipeline Program, a volunteer education program dedicated to recruiting under-represented students to the field of medicine. He published research about addressing geographic disparities in recruiting medical students through virtual education programs. In 2022, he was inducted into the Civic Honors Society at the Tisch College of Civic Life in recognition of his work.
Jacob became involved in the ISSTD in 2025 after recognizing the extent of dissociative symptoms in his patients in a variety of primary care settings. Due to his passion for improving education, he began to conduct research with Dr. Judy Lewis on understanding approaches to education of residents on trauma and dissociative disorders.
