Joanne Cohen Ph.D., LMFT, NCC (Jo/she/her) is professor of counseling at Kutztown University. She has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Georgia and she is a licensed psychologist in PA. Jo has worked in a number of clinical settings, such as community mental health, partial, inpatient, and criminal justice settings. Jo has presented at dozens of conferences, including ACA and APA Humanistic Society She has hosted, co-hosted, presented and participated at 25+ person-centered conferences, including Warm Springs International, Experiencing Diversity, and the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach. Jo was a two term reviewer for the Journal of Counseling and Development. She currently reviews for the Person-Centered & Experiential Psychotherapies journal and the Person-Centered Journal. For PCJ she held various posts, including editor-in-chief. In 2011, Jo received the ADPCA's distinguished service award. In 2019 she received the distinguished service award from the Association for Adult Development and Aging following her elder abuse research and her work as a volunteer ombudsperson for a county office of aging. Jo has published more than a dozen articles on topics related to client-centered therapy, counselor supervision and education, trauma counseling, and child and elder abuse. She has had two sabbaticals focusing on clinical work with clients and families with trauma. At the Children’s Alliance Center of Berks County from 2005-2006 she trained in prolonged exposure trauma therapy and forensic interviewing. At a community-based refugee center from 2021-2022, she coordinated a clinical trauma counseling team in collaboration with a community NGO. Cohen has received over $46,000 in professional development and research grants. Her current research focuses on therapeutic drawings to facilitate child and adolescent client disclosure of trauma and abuse, and the use of client-centered communication to culturally adapt and decolonize mental health practice for under-resourced communities in marginalized spaces.
