Dr. Phillips has worked in social services for over 30 years, with the past 20 being focused on complex trauma, dissociative disorders, and global mental health. She is the founder of Integrative Trauma Treatment Center (ITTC, which is housed )in Portland, Oregon, ITTC is an outpatient clinic specializing in trauma and related conditions, emphasizing care for those living with structural dissociation. She also co-founded ITTCs educational arm, Kalos, which is designed to expand global access to various solutions to the world's mental health challenges through cultural exchange and equalizing access to information.
Athena holds a bachelors and masters degree in Social Work, and a doctorate in Psychology. She’s certified in EMDR, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, and has completed Level I & II of Internal Family Systems training. Her doctoral project was on the topic of Trauma coaching as an innovation for resource-scarce communities through a task-sharing lens.
Dr. Phillips is a contributing author in IFS-Informed EMDR: Creative and Collaborative Approaches. She also authored a workbook for survivors called The Heart of the Lion: A Workbook for Moving Through Trauma.
In addition to her clinical work, Athena is a global trainer and advocate. She developed and led the Multicultural Trauma Training in Kigali, Rwanda, presented at The Global Trauma Congress in Rome, Italy, and continues to present internationally on trauma, dissociation, and global mental health. Finally, she created The Orenda Project in effort to expand trauma-informed support in under-resourced communities worldwide, as she passionately believes in innovation as a solution to the global mental health care shortage.
