Aubrie Patterson is a doctoral student pursuing a PhD in interdisciplinary health (psychosocial concentration) at Northern Arizona University (NAU), with a primary research focus on how institutions such as religious organizations cause, contribute to, or mitigate traumatic suffering. Prior to arriving at NAU, Aubrie received a master’s degree in experimental psychology from Western Washington University (WWU) in 2023. There, she contributed to Dr. Brianna Delker’s research focused on societal perceptions of sexual violence victims and perpetrators, and she completed a master’s thesis on societal perceptions of dissociative disorders, childhood trauma, and diagnostic labels. As a doctoral student since 2023, she works with Dr. Laura Noll at NAU investigating the systemic and institutional contexts in which complex trauma survivors attempt to navigate their own recovery and empowerment. As the Team lead for the Community Impact Fellowship Program (CIFP), for which Dr. Noll is the PI, Aubrie is leading a community-based participatory, mixed-methods investigation into staff wellness at a local domestic violence shelter. Other CIFP projects include a community-engaged qualitative study on complex trauma therapists and how they navigate the treatment of structural dissociation, and an emerging community-engaged program evaluation on a prison reentry program for a division of Catholic Charities. Aubrie also works with Dr. Noll on an investigation into how childhood trauma and deployment loneliness contribute to posttraumatic outcomes for military personnel, and in April of 2026, she will propose her dissertation on religious institutional betrayal related to child sexual abuse. In addition to her adacemic pursuits, Aubrie joined the Center for Institutional Courage, inc. as a Research Associate in 2023 and has since supported the ongoing project tracking the landscape of institutional betrayal and institutional courage research.
